Masry's passion and enthusiasm are hard to match and impossible to contain. We think she'd make a fabulous state Assembly member, much better than her opponent, incumbent Audra Strickland. Strickland, whose husband Tony is running for State Controller, toes the uber-conservative party line with a blind fierceness that is out of step with this district. Masry would bring fresh insight and a balanced approach to the state Assembly.

MORE OF YOUR LETTERS!

More and more voters are writing in to the Ventura County Star to let them know who has their vote this November.

Letters: 37th Assembly District
November 1, 2006

Endorsement kudos
Re: your Oct. 26 editorial, "Ferial Masry for 37th Assembly":

Kudos to The Star for throwing its support to Masry in the 37th Assembly District race. I could not agree more with The Star's comparison of the candidates.

With Masry in Sacramento, we will finally have an accessible representative who reflects the values and meets the needs of her constituency. And if one looks at her positions, that includes the vast majority of Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike.

— Matthew Weisman,

Change is needed

Re: your Oct. 26 editorial, "Ferial Masry for 37th Assembly":
Congratulations on The Star's recognition of Masry, a truly intelligent and passionate candidate for state office. She will surely bring a much-needed change to state politics in the 37th Assembly District.

I look forward to her victory Tuesday.

Norm Bauer, Camarillo

Don't support tribes

Re: your Oct. 26 article, "Gaming tribesStricklandlands":

I see that the gaming tribes are using their massive funds to back the campaigns of Tony and Audra Strickland. And, of course, these family values Republicans welcome the money.

One of my biggest political mistakes was voting for Indian gaming. The tribes were supposed to share the money with the poor tribes that didn't have casinos. That didn't happen, and, in fact, several of the gaming tribes have heartlessly kicked some lifelong members out of their tribes in order to have a bigger share for those members who are in favor.

There is no appeal for those kicked out in the cold because our courts have no jurisdiction on Indian land. We have created a monster schoolyard bully who throws his weight around and influences political outcomes at the expense of the rest of us.
I have not spent one penny in an Indian casino, and I will vote the opposite of whomever and whatever they back with their millions.

Alex Magdaleno, Camarillo

No time for average citizen

Re: your Oct. 26 editorial, "Ferial Masry for 37th Assembly":

Although I often disagree with The Star's editorial opinions and endorsements, I am pleased to see it supports Masry.

Unfortunately, Audra Strickland's "string of accomplishments" is rather shallow, and her neoconservative views are neither what the state nor the nation needs at the moment. I am also quite concerned about the significant financial support she and her husband have received from Indian gaming. Such contributions cannot help but wield some influence that may not be in the majority's best interest.

Over the past two years, I sent correspondence to Ms. Strickland on three occasions. I never received the courtesy of a reply. It is pretty clear to me that her priorities are not the average citizen.

David B. Shepard, Camarillo

Follow the money

Re: your Oct. 26 article, "Gaming tribes aid Stricklands":
The headline told the story in just four words. Reading on, I discovered that both Tony and Audra Strickland, candidates for state controller and the 37th Assembly District, respectively, who profess to be fiscal conservatives and a repository of family values, just can't say no when it comes to the color green ($1 million of the little greenbacks, in fact).

Can't they win their respective seats on their own merits? Apparently not. Ferial Masry, Audra's opponent, who received the endorsement of The Star, and John Chiang, eminently qualified for the job of state controller through education and his experience on the Board of Equalization, must be making the Indian gambling interests in California uneasy.

When voters cast their ballots Tuesday, they need to remember three words: Follow the money! We want to be able to trust our state and local officials. A vote for John Chiang and Ferial Masry, and a yes vote on Proposition 89 to limit independent expenditures to $1,000 per year is a good start.

Sharon L. Hillbrant,

The Community Speaks Out For Ferial!

The Ventura County Star featured some letters from citizens in the 37th AD who want to see Ferial Masry as their next Assemblywoman. Here they are:

Your letters: 37th assembly district — Audra Strickland versus Ferial Masry
October 29, 2006

Represents community
Ferial Masry is the independent candidate for the 37th Assembly District. She is not beholden to gambling, insurance or any other special interests. I plan to vote for her because she is truly part of our community and therefore will work to represent the people.

— Gordon Clint, Newbury Park

Elephant crosses over
I had a chance encounter with a candidate named Ferial Masry. It was refreshing to hear from a candidate with such a unique perspective and actual solutions about the problems facing us. Maybe not being from America holds some people back, but it hasn't affected her. And while, I hate the labels we place on our political beliefs — donkeys and elephants — I can honestly say here's one elephant who is voting for the best person for the job, who is Ms. Masry.

— Steven Scott, Westlake Village

Ferial Masry gets it
Tuesday, an overflow crowd attended a League of Women Voters' well-planned debate between Ferial Masry and Audra Strickland.

I was most impressed by Masry; instead of sound bites, I heard nuanced explanations of problems and unique methods of solving them.
What disturbed me most was the fact that Strickland never responded to questions regarding the contributions she accepted from Wal-Mart, which hires illegal immigrants, and from Indian tribes who promote gambling.

Also, she told the crowd that Proposition 90, regarding eminent domain, would protect them against government takeover of their homes. This is not so; it's a money grabber!
My vote will go to Masry.

— Gerda Fadden, Thousand Oaks

Masry best
As a retired teacher, I have followed the Campaign of Ferial Masry for 37th Assembly District with interest. I've heard her address my husband's Rotary Club to get acquainted with voters, long before the official campaign began. I've also heard her at small in-home coffee klatches and, most recently, in debate with her opponent at Moorpark Community College.

I am proud to be known as a loyal, moderate Democratic supporter of Ms. Masry.
Her positions on the issues before the Ventura County voters are intelligent, insightful and moderate. I believe she will represent all Ventura citizens in the 37th Assembly District most effectively. She appeals to all segments of the voting population, regardless of registration, and will surely be more effective in Sacramento than her opponent who can only claim success in supporting minor issues, e.g., ownership of wild animals, a law against extended tethering of dogs and the use of mercury in hospitals.

Ms. Masry is a vibrant, vocal, independent citizen. As a public school teacher in Reseda, she is a real asset to the education of students in her high school classes in history and government. I am proud of her for stepping forward to serve us in the Legislature.
I urge you to join me in voting for Ms. Masry as our representative for the 37th Assembly District.

— Diane Dailey Venable, Thousand Oaks

Beholden to tribes
When it was revealed that Indian tribal gaming interests had provided more than $22,000 to Audra Strickland's Assembly campaign, she was quoted as saying, "I'm just pleased there are people out there helping me." Now those interests have formed a new Political Action Committee called "Team 2006," which is sponsored by the California Sovereign Indian Nations. She must be even more pleased that they are now spending an additional $100,000 directly on her campaign.
Those gaming interests also donate heavily to five other members of the California Assembly.

One of those members is Bonnie Garcia, R-Cathedral City. The tribes gave very generous funds both directly and indirectly to her. A newspaper reported Oct. 17 that Richard Milanovich, chairman of "Team 2006," gave an interesting answer to the question of if the donations to Garcia were supposed to give favorable treatment to the tribes. His response was: "That's why we help this woman get elected every two years!"

Does it seem reasonable that he would expect favorable treatment from Garcia, but not from Audra Strickland?

Strickland's 27-page campaign donation list is replete with donations from gambling, horse-racing and liquor companies.

All kinds of insurance companies, from health to property insurers, are falling over themselves to donate to her campaign. Could that be because she's a member of the Insurance Committee in the Assembly? Would the interests of residents of the 37th District be put before those of an insurance company? That's something for us to contemplate.

I wish we, as her constituents, could be as pleased as Strickland is to hear of those big contributions!

— Linda Brown, Thousand Oaks

Problems understood
I have been a resident of Ventura County for more than a decade and am concerned about the issues that we must address in this election. In contrast to the incumbent, Ferial Masry understands the problems in our district and state and will take committed action as our legislator.

She will initiate and support policies and legislation at the state level to preserve our quality of life and provide opportunities for our children to thrive by reforming and modernizing our educational system to compete in the global economy.

We need strong representation in Sacramento that protects us from the rapid changes resulting from global warming. Masry will help develop long-term solutions for a post-oil- dependent economy instead of costly stopgap measures.

Masry is in favor of the bond measures that fix our aging infrastructure now, instead of allowing our levees and water supply to remain vulnerable and a catastrophe ready to happen.

Most of all, she favors developing clear, compassionate and comprehensive solutions to our illegal immigration problem in partnership with our federal government.
Please join me in voting for Masry and be the change we wish to see in the world.

— Roz Sherman, Newbury Park

Clear differences
I was grateful to hear both candidates of the 37th Assembly District at Moorpark College on Tuesday. The differences between the candidates are clear. Voters have a choice.

My vote goes to Ferial Masry because I believe her policies make sense for the long term and will strengthen our community and state.

— Barbara Leighton, Newbury Park

Right choice
Re: your Oct. 26 editorial, "Ferial Masry for 37th Assembly":
Congratulations! You have seen what we knew all along. Ferial Masry is a refreshing change from the antics of the Stricklands and is sincere, honest and worthy of your choice. Now let's just get everyone to the polls to vote for her. They won't regret it.

— Jody Avery-Smith, Newbury Park

Ferial would like to thank everyone who wrote to the Star for thire kind words and support.

Election Week Countdown!

A message from Ferial Masry:

Dear Friends,
With only one week to go before the November 7 election, I am writing to ask you to do every thing you can to help elect me to represent you. Starting Oct. 3 -10AM-Ch. 25-will feature our Jill Martinez for 24 U.S. Assembly.) On " Eye on the Issues"

Ferial is passionate, sincere and brilliant as always. My new slogan for her is: SHE WEARS HER HEART ON HER SLEEVE FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE. As a teacher who's lived in various foreign countries and 28 years in the U.S., she has an interesting view of what our educational system needs in California especially. She fielded questions from Tom Mullens and Virginia Rogalsky and a political student from CLU, on her foremost passion education, and gas prices, environment and need for public transit, the fading middle class that built America, changes needed to pass "Clean Money Act", how we can save money with health care for all, and taxes are not punishment and when handled with care benefit us all.

Ferial obviously loves people and has dedicated herself to making Democracy work for us here and now. She works with and for all Americans not just Democrats.

YOU CAN MAKE COMMENTS OR SUGGEST TOPICS AT - eyeontheissues@aol.com IF YOU WANT TO SEE THAT THIS REMARKABLE WOMAN GETS HER CHANCE IN OUR CALIFORNIA 37TH ASSEMBLY DISTRICT, YOU CAN CALL HER OFFICE AT 805-494-1253 AND TELL THEM YOU WANT TO HELP IN ANY WAY YOU CAN. This letter (that appeared in the Ventura County Star) gives us some insight as to why we need a candidate like Ferial who will truly represent the interests of the district.

September 07, 2006 - Strickland fails constituents

Re: your Sept. 1 article, "Health insurance reform bill sent to governor":

History was made when SB840, universal healthcare, passed the California Legislature. While the Senate had voted in favor of the bill previously, this was the first time the Assembly had approved single-payer healthcare coverage. As we continue to suffer from an ailing, failing healthcare system, where is our Assembly representative, Audra Strickland? She was one of the few to vote "no."
It is anticipated that this plan will cost less, yet provide superior healthcare to Californians, with individual choice of physicians. The bill asks for no funding as written. It simply would establish a commission of experts from various fields to delve even more deeply into the details.

Currently, those who can pay, primarily insurance companies, bear a disproportionate share of the cost of care for those who cannot pay. The quality of care suffers for everyone, as emergency facilities are crowded with those who have become critically ill because they felt they could not afford to seek medical intervention at the inception of their illness or injury. Obviously, this situation causes unnecessary suffering and even deaths.
We need someone in the Assembly who will represent us, the citizens, who will listen to us and carry our message to Sacramento. Fortunately, such a person is running for this position in the 37th Assembly District: Ferial Masry. I urge you to vote for Masry in November.

Penny Strowger, Thousand Oaks

Ferial Gives Interview on Local television Show

Ferial's appearance on the local cable access show "Eye on the Issues" will aire Tuesday September 4th at 10:00am, and EVERY Tuesday after at the the same time. The event will be held In room 1 of Nygreen Hall at 7:00 pm by the CLU Democrats club along with Valley Grassroots for Democracy.
For more information please contact Chris McGuinness at: cmcguinn@clunet.edu

Stricklands losing support among Republicans

The 37th Assembly District of California has always been considered a "safe Republican seat"; add to this the fact that our country has become increasingly polarized (politically) and it is easy to see why many people are surprised that some Republicans have come out in support of Ferial Masry. The letter below might shed some light on why this is happening.

-Christopher McGuinness

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Couple losing support

The Stricklands, Tony and Audra, may wonder why they are losing support from the Republican Party. Let me count the ways.

First, when Tony left the state Assembly, he proudly announced his new job would be to defeat moderate Republicans. For someone who ran for office as a "Reagan Republican" he has betrayed President Reagan's 11th commandment.

Because Supervisor Judy Mikels supported Jeff Gorell, who ran against Audra, they have done everything imaginable to defeat her run for re-election. Mikels, of course, is the only conservative member on the Board of Supervisors, and the only one to stand up against the public employee unions.

The Stricklands wanted to replace her with a far-left liberal who has a long history of supporting Democratic candidates from Bill Clinton to Al Gore to John Kerry and many others.

The Stricklands are opportunists. This was apparent when they both recently tried to take out papers to run for Rep. Elton Gallegly's seat. It would appear they are not terribly committed to their campaigns for state controller and Assembly.

Tony Strickland is running for an office for which he has absolutely no qualifications. The state controller's Web site lists the responsibilities and functions of the office. The controller is the chief financial officer of the sixth-largest economy in the world, administering $300 billion in state pension funds. The office functions are as follows: (partial list)

Account for and control disbursement of all state funds.

Determine legality and accuracy of every claim against the state.

Issue warrants in payment of the state's bills, including lottery prizes.

Administer the uniform state payroll system.

Audit and process all personnel and payroll transactions for state civil service.

Responsible for auditing various state and local government programs.

Inform the public of financial transactions of city, county and district governments.

The job calls for someone with an extensive background in finance and accounting. Unfortunately, Tony Strickland's financial experience is limited to his household checking account.

There is no reason for a Republican voter to support either of them.

Jere Robings, Thousand Oaks
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ferial Masry: Out And About In The 37th

Ferial Masry has been meeting and speaking all over 37th Assembly District wowing both Democrats and Republicans with dynamic new ideas and passionate commitment to the people she wishes to represent.

"She was totally different, fresh, and she obviously impressed everyone in the room," commented Alan H Simon, who heard Ferial speak at a recent Kitchen Table Democracy gathering."
